(a/k/a RL25201)
Don't be shy! After a while you'll forget you're talking to an airplane, the @#!!% thing is talking back and you're stone cold sober! Don't be surprised if he's a little ticked off at being the sole survivor of six Arrows. No, singing the praises of John Diefenbaker would NOT be a good way to make friends. Staying on his good side would be the sensible thing to do; seeing as the initialization of latent energies in the metal of his airframe have made him not only sentient and lingual but completely independent of fuel, facilities or conventional weaponry, indetectible by radar or heat, and three times faster to boot. Should you even dare to guess about what this does for his range and loiter time? Oh, and he's polymorphic, just thought we should inform you. As we said before, "Sky" has some....issues. The therapist or grief counsellor has not been found who is brave enough to take on this laddie... oh well, some folks just have to work through these things for themselves and it seems that he's one of them. SO... how did he get away from the torches in 1959? Aren't psychically constructed doppelgangers just SO handy? The scrappers never did figure it out. That two-hundred-mile, three-stage horse and mule trek to the next runway through a null-space dimension was rather pokey - you see, engines don't work there and it makes Death Valley look like Vancouver! Then they had to fly the thing to the ley line nexus where the actual initialization would be done, and THAT was a barrel of laughs :P! The casualties were rather ghastly but when you see how high the stakes are now, you'll be glad they considered this sacrifice worth it. |

Another disgruntled orphan...her parents sent her up north with her grandfather on the eve of the North American Collapse - that would bother a person for sure! Living in the bush of the Northwest Territories, living off whatever game could be found there, dodging Ayran Covenant troops still trying to consolidate their conquest of North America and 'baggers' out to relieve their shortage of fertile white women...her idea of fun alright! That pretty pendant Gramps gave her on her fourth birthday did bear a resemblance to a certain aircraft...what happens twelve years later when she happens to bleed on it? Whammo, the 'adopted relation' she never knew she had is back on this earth with Black Friday still fresh in his mind! Ooh, what happens when the two of them touch and they're both in a snit? If you serve the Covenant or the wannabe Caliphate you don't want to know... |

Co-pilot on the last pre-Collapse shuttle mission. Being an "Arrowhead" enabled him to recognize the unexpected company that showed up on Easter Island where he and the rest of the crew have been walled off from the rest of the world for dog's years, thereby defusing a panicky situation. In the following days he becomes a father figure to Sky and Mariah, as his background in flight instruction and principled common sense provide a holdfast on which their real education can begin. Sadly, it appears that teaching them will be his final act as cancer ravages his body, but will the island's hidden forces surrender him so easily? |

Space medicine specialist on the last NASA shuttle mission, now the island's only remaining doctor, perservering despite the lack of modern drugs or antibiotics, not to mention equipment and supplies. If a horse kicks you and breaks your leg in three places, she's the one who can either set it... or amputate. That's no fun without anasthesia, but it beats dying. Mariah stays at Celine's place during her spell on the island, helping her out while watching over Sky's first interactions with human society as a participant rather than a tool. Celine never did marry or have children of her own; it'd be logical to assume that these two would assume that role if only for a short time. |

| tzushannah
(the late RL25205)
In the ancient well at the bottom of Easter Island's cave system, below the level of the sea in what was once a high mountain, this artifact spirit has found new life. Fifty-two years before, an intact avionics component from one of Sky's not-so-lucky siblings became the refuge for its compressed soul. After a journey halfway around the world, it was cast into a subterranean pool that was full and sparkling but not with water, which was a dormant "server" for a worldwide system of magnetic forces and patterns which can serve as a virtual computer. Unfolding like a zipped file, the soul would reignite the blue fires of this node and recreate itself virtually through its own "akashic record", becoming she who is now Tzushannah. The Array Field, as this network of forces is called, quite frankly ain't what it used to be and restoring its remaining nodes and broken links will be a near-impossible task. This is the labor in which Tzushannah, well guardian of the Rapa Nui node, enlists her surviving brother and his new pilot/member-of-the-tribe. It is apparent, however, that 'Shannah alone cannot completely control the forces she has resurrected. She needs help, but where is she going to get it? |

Pilot/commander of the last shuttle mission. He spends a lot of time in the shadow of the orbiter he was responsible for, sometimes with Jerry Goldstein, sometimes with himself and a goatskin of hooch. Don't look so smug; you might also turn to drink if you were a family man twelve years separated from his wife and daughters with no idea of what has become of them in the chaos of the Collapse and the brutal reign of the Ayran Covenant. |

On the surface he's a somewhat dishevelled long-lapsed biochemist, scratch him and you will find a tough, dogmatic conservative Jew from Queens, New York. He has maintained a great mind and a semblance of sanity, but the rigor he uses to make sense of his world has also driven a wedge between him and the youngest member of the space mission who has similar ethnic and geographical roots but a decidedly different view of 'the way it is' and its underpinnings. Never again the twixt shall meet? |

kaplan & hiromi kobayashi
The youngest shuttle crew member in the program's history and the first cadet to go up. It was a publicity stunt, really, to try to get young people interested in an endeavor they'd come to view as an expensive joy ride for middle-aged astronauts, but young Morris really tried to pull his weight. Alas, the attitudes of his carefully dissembled and concealed background could not be long hidden from seven other people living in very close confines and this intergenerational tension combined with a couple of unfortunate incidents led to his self-imposed exile from the group when they landed on Easter Island and "the wall" went up. He still has a beef with Jerry Goldstein in particular, although relations have stabilized with the rest of the group. You just don't disrespect the fellow whose knowledge of ahem...."alternative pharmaceuticals" provide the only drugs now available here. Hiromi Kobayashi is Morris' common-law spouse. A native of Osaka, Japan whose aspirations at the age of twelve revolved around musical theatre and a career as an "idol singer", Hiromi was dragged along by her father on a tour of the South Pacific which included a sidetrip to Easter Island. Their timing was rather unfortunate... when the storm wall went up, they were stuck there... Hiromi's father broke under the stress of isolation and upon getting his hands on a firearm, promptly served himself a round in the mouth. Hiromi blamed herself for the suicide and became more and more estranged from the rest of the island population. Eventually she moved in with Morris Kaplan, growing and gathering medicinal herbs on the island's highest slopes. |

| "dizzy"
The once-mighty space shuttle Discovery is now the world's most expensive cat perch/children's jungle gym. Sheep, horses and fowl nibble blades of grass around her undercarriage. Her pristine surfaces are now dingy and pitted from years of exposure to the elements. It's a great comedown for the one of the jewels of the pre-Collapse U.S. space program. Most people see a junker sitting there, something that will no longer be of any use in the heavens or on Earth, yet Doug Wong guards her zealously. Is there something more inside than long-dead machinery? Does a soul stir within? Along comes Sky-On-Water, who can still talk to the essences of such machines as he was in the dawn of his life. Now's your chance to be heard, Dizzy... |

Sooner or later, we have to hold our noses and lift up the curtain that reveals the noxious stench of the Ayran Covenant... what do we see when we look inside? Here are a mother and her small daughter, they look like they could have stepped out of a Victorian postcard. But... it's like a piece of chamber music with a pretty melody desperately trying to cover for harmonies deteriorating into cacaphony. Look at them in their pretty dresses, look at the flowers and topiary shrubs in the garden on a sunny afternoon in the Napa Valley; the slaves toiling in the vinyard and the well-attired men scheming in the mansion are well out of view. Hold an "old garden" rose to your face and take a deep whiff - it'll make the stench go away for a minute or two. However, "downwind" is everywhere you look in this well-groomed hellhole. |

Sooner or later, we have to discuss antagonists. This is one of them. Sure, he's @#&$ing brilliant. He's also an asshole. He could have left the country when it went to hell, but he stayed to serve the new management, such as THAT is. He had a choice, he made it. Walk through his psyche - better bring the hip waders and the barf bucket... this bitter little schmuck is a study in self-absorbed, unlovable, misogynistic egomania. He can't stand that something that looked like a refugee from an aviation museum kicked his scalar-resonating ass in the wilds of what once was Utah. He's got to come up with something bigger, better, nastier... but he does need a little capital to get it off the ground, until the high-echelon Covenant men can see the worth of it for themselves. Think of "bride prices" mixed with stock-market speculation and syndication, think of that little girl, and the woman he had to BUY from the Northern Possessions Bureau in order to breed her.... and puke. |
invicta |
Since
the Collapse she's lived at an outback sheep station in Australia. She's
a 'yank' but people like her, which is fortunate as Americans out in TROTW
are now essentially stateless and don't get cut much slack these days.
Canadians and South American latins get better treatment than they do,
generally. That's what happens when a once great and free state rots and
finally falls.
But she saw it coming... Invicta could do nothing on her own to turn back the tide of corruption, plague and chaos in the land that was her beloved cradle, but still she works on it, quietly. She is no man's issue, no woman's child, but she was made by men of the earth's bones. For decades she thought herself unique and alone in the world, but one day she had a vision like none she'd ever had before. She is no longer the Only One in the world. There is Another. She simply MUST find out... |
dierdre linnane |
She is without friends in a harsh institutional world where jungle law rules once the teacher's back is turned. Her past is unknown to her peers but on her account some inconvenient health measures had to be taken. That didn't sit well with many of her classmates. She's small, shy and isolated.... fair game for the cruel, the violent and the unscrupulous who do their best to do her in. But it's funny that she would wear such bizarre-looking bracelets and they NEVER come off. Those personality changes and mood swings are also quite...perplexing. Getting chummy with her may be a bumpy ride... |
